Rabat - The European Commission Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (ECHO) donated 106,000 euros to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent to provide assistance to the people affected by the floods that ravaged large swathes of southern Morocco, the Delegation of the European Union in Morocco said Monday.
The donation, which follows a call from the organization to provide immediate assistance, will provide assistance to 5,500 people (1,100 families) as well as non-food items such as blankets, mattresses and kitchen utensils, the Delegation said in a statement.
This contribution will also help to resupply the basic stocks of the Moroccan Red Crescent and provide first aid and psychosocial support to flood-affected people in the regions of Souss-Massa-Draa and Guelmim-Smara.
During 2014, ECHO has signed a humanitarian contribution of 3 million euros with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent to support, in case of disaster, the Emergency Relief Fund of the Federation.
