Rabat - Starting today, the city of Agadir will host the largest American-led military exercise in Africa, known as the “African Lion.”
The military operations will involve approximately 350 U.S. service members, 150 soldiers of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces, and additional personnel from Germany, England, Tunisia, Mauritania and Senegal.
The “African Lion 15” operation taking place in 2015 in Agadir is the largest on the continent since the US Military started its exercises in Africa.
The first phase of the “African Lion” operation is expected to start with a workshop during the first week to strengthen learning skills on military techniques, followed by crisis training in the second week. The main phase of the exercise is due to take place mid-May.
Besides military ground exercises, the “African Lion” operation includes technical cooperation, strengthening military intelligence services, leading peacekeeping operations, humanitarian support for civilians and testing the capacity of mutual interference between multiple countries in international crises.
American media sources reported that the “African Lion” operation is held according to the laws and regulations of the United Nations and acts mainly to strengthen the military cooperation between participating countries.
The United States Armed Forces count on the “African Lion” operation to support mutual relations between Rabat and Washington. This operation is intended to open new doors in military cooperation between the two countries, especially with regards to humanitarian aid and crisis training.
The African Lion exercise is held every year in Morocco.
The American Army has hired interpreters and translators fluent in English, Arabic, French and Tamazight (Berber language) to assist during the military exercises with the Moroccan Royal Forces.
