Washington- King Mohammed VI will be visiting Mali next week, merely two weeks after its presidential election, to meet with the new president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita—according to MAP.

The king plans to visit to Bamako next week to attend the inauguration of Keita, who was recently elected with nearly 80 % of the vote, on August 15th.  The elections succeeded the composition of the new Malian government, led by PM Oumar Ly Tatam.

The Moroccan monarch’s visit was preceded by the installation of a military field hospital in Bamako, and Morocco’s large humanitarian aid package to the people of Mali.

Morocco has humanitarian, as well as economic interests in Mali—many of Morocco’s major economic operators have branches in Mali, including Maroc Telecom, Attijariwafa Bank, BMCE Bank, and the Bank Populaire. .

This will be King Mohammed VI’s first visit to Mali since the Tuareg rebel crisis erupted in January of 2012.  The rebels, supported by armed jihadist groups linked to Al-Qaeda, were driven from Mali in January of 2013, by a Franco-African military intervention that Morocco was in full support of.
