Madrid- Cooperation with Morocco in the fight against jihadist terrorism has become more and more "fundamental" for Spain, notes Elcano Royal Institute, a leading Spanish think-tank.
"Given the risks and threats associated with jihadist terrorism, cooperation with Morocco has become fundamental for Spain", the prestigious think-tank says in an analysis elaborated by Fernando Reinares, senior fellow in international terrorism in Elcano, and Carola Garcia-Calvo, global terrorism specialist.
"The Spanish-Moroccan cooperation, which dates back to the 1980s and 1990s, has witnessed a qualitative leap after the 11 March 2004 attacks in Madrid and goes through its best period on judicial and police levels", the analysis notes, adding that the two neighboring countries are currently fighting "individual or collective elements involved in jihadist terrorism."
The analysis authors emphasize the decision of both countries to exchange liaison magistrates, who play an important role in facilitating anti-terrorist cooperation.
"This innovative and valuable work performed by liaison magistrates (...) is a very effecient tool to ensure the success of judicial cooperation," they said.
