Rabat - Polisario leader Mohammed Abdelaziz has reportedly expressed his desire to resign his long-running leadership of the Polisario Front, calling for elections to appoint a successor.
According to the Forum for the Support of Tindouf Autonomists, known by its French acronym Forsatin, Mohammed Abdelaziz has announced he is to step down from his duties as the leader of Polisario during the 12th edition of the Front's so-called National Secretariat.
Many in the Tindouf camps have been preoccupied with Mohammed Abdelaziz's reported plan to step down. Some opposition forces have welcomed the decision while others consider the move to be a mere political maneuver by Algeria to absorb the anger of the Sahrawi population.
Others stressed that Mohammed Abdelaziz's statement is not honest at all, saying that it is a scheme to overlook the just demands of the Sahrawi population.
To prove their point, Forsatin said in a statement obtained by Morocco World News that the recent meeting of the Front's General Secretariat has called, among other things, for the need to form a committee that will bring together Polisario-affiliated civil and security officials.
According to Forsatin, this call proves that the Front is moving towards keeping the same leadership on the grounds that it is the demand of the masses.
