The Stinking Local Elections

Rabat - This Friday Moroccans are voting on who will run their municipal and regional councils during the municipal and regional elections 2015 taking place all over the kingdom. Today’s polls are the first of their kind after the adoption of the new constitution in July 2011.

Morocco World News presents its readers with five facts about the municipal and regional elections in numbers.

14.5 Million

More than 14.5 million Moroccans are eligible to go to the polls to choose their municipal and regional representatives.

130, 925

130,925 is the total number of candidates running for the municipal and regional elections across Morocco. 70,544 are running as individual candidates not representing any political party.

Out of 130, 925 candidates, 7, 588 are running for seats in the regional councils, while the rest are running for municipal seats.

18,227

The Party of Authenticity and Modernity (PAM) has the largest number of candidates in the current elections with over 18,227 candidates. In other words, 13.92 percent of candidates across Morocco are from the PAM.

PAM is followed by Istiqlal party (PI) with a total of 17, 214 candidates. The leader of the coalition government, the Party of Justice and Development (PJD) ranks third with 16, 310 candidates.

4,000

Over 4,000 people, including 76 foreigners have been mobilized as observers to monitor the 2015 regional and municipal elections.

Morocco’s Special Commission for the Accreditation of Election Observers also announced that over  41 national and international bodies have been accredited to monitor the elections, including 34 Moroccan associations, Morocco’s National Council for Human Rights (CNDH) and 6 international NGOs.
