Rabat - The Party of Modernity and Authenticity (PAM) is poised to be the winner of Morocco’s municipal and regional elections, which were held on Friday across the country.
According to a statement issued late on Friday by Morocco’s Minister of Interior, Mohammed Hassad, the PAM obtained 5,064 seats, representing 20.77% of the total seats at stake. It is followed by the Party of Justice and Development with 4,187 seats (17.17%).
Based on the initial results, the Istiqlal Patry (IP) is the major loser of Friday's elections. The party led by its controversial leader, Hamid Chabat, obtained 3,924 seats (16.09%) down from more than 5,000 seats in the 2009 municipal elections.
The National Rally of Independent (RNI) obtained 3343 seats (13.71%). It is followed by the Popular Movement (MP) with 2,347 seats (9.62%), the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP) with 2008 seats (8.23), the Party of Progress and Socialism with 1312 (5.38%), and the Constitutional Union (UC) with 1124 seats (4.61%).
The major winner Friday’s polls is the PJD, the party that heads of the coalition government, which increased its share of seats from 1,505 to 4,187 seats.
The results announced by the Minister of Interior are based on the counting of 80% of seats at stake in Friday’s polls.
The Minister added that voter turnout reached 52.36 per cent, almost the same percentage of the 2009 elections.
