Morocco Received Over 10 Million Tourists in 2014

Rabat - Tourists reported 59 cases of harassment across Morocco last September, according to figures made public by the tourism police units.

A statement by Casablanca police directorate, citing figures from the tourism police units, said that the number of crimes against tourists dropped in September 2015 with 287 cases, compared to 394 cases during the same period last year.

The statement noted that 169 cases out of the reported 287 concern illegal tour guides. On the other hand, the number of thefts — the most common crime committed against tourists — reached 32 cases, while the number of harassment incidents against tourists reached 59 cases.

Casablanca police directorate said that operations conducted by police services across Morocco during the same period led to the arrest of over 128 criminals, who have been all brought to justice.

Earlier this year, UK’s Daily Mail ranked Morocco among the world’s holiday less female-friendly destinations for women.

The newspaper described Morocco as a country “where women may be exposed to misogyny, pestering and, in some cases, danger.”

The newspaper noted that “although the Foreign Office advises that violent crime isn’t currently major issue, it’s common for female tourists, particularly those travelling on their own, to be routinely harassed by men.”
