Rabat - Stelia Aerospace, a company specializing in making large structures and components for aircraft, including airliners, launched a production facility in Morocco on Wednesday, Minister of Industry said.
Moroccan Minister of Industry, Trade and New Technologies Moulay Hafid Elalamy laid the first stone of this project to confirm Morocco's competitiveness in the aerospace sector.
With an initial investment of about MAD 426 million ($40.81 million), the new plant in Nouaceur, where Casablanca's airport is located, will be dedicated to the manufacturing of aero-structures.
It will specialize in assembling complex aeronautical subassemblies for Airbus series programs (A320, A330) ATR as well as A350 and the Bombardier Global 7000/8000.
"It is just the first part. The plant is expected to expand in the coming few years," a source from the company said.
"The investment is the first phase of the project. In 18 months, we will disclose the details of the second phase and the total amount of the project", said Hamid Benbrahim El-Andaloussi, the president of the Association of Moroccan Aerospace Industries (GIMAS).
Set on a 15,000m² area the plant, which is the second plant for the European company in Morocco, is expected to create around 400 jobs related to the aerospace industry.
Morocco has attracted a number of large auto and aerospace companies in recent years, including Delphi, Bombardier and Eaton Corp.
