Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Salaheddine Mezouar

Rabat - Following the news that Sweden is on the verge of recognizing he so-called Sahrawi Republic (SADR), Moroccan Foreign Ministry has summoned the Swedish ambassador in Rabat to protest against the Swedish government’s “assault on the Moroccan sovereignty.”

Alyaoum24 cited source saying that the Moroccan foreign ministry summoned the Swedish ambassador Erica Ferriere this Tuesday, to express the kingdom’s rejection of Stockholm’s project to recognize the so-called SADR.

This comes less than 24 hours after an emergency meeting of the Moroccan government and the opposition on Monday to discuss the latest development on the Western Sahara conflict in light of the Swedish move. During the meeting, the government has allegedly decided to cancel its decision to allow Swedish furniture giant, Ikea, to open five stores in Morocco.

Swedish Foreign Ministry spokesperson Katarina Byrenius Roslund said Sweden has not recognized the region as an independent state but is conducting an internal review of its "Western Sahara policy."

Meanwhile, nine Moroccan party leaders are due to visit Sweden this week, in an effort to convince Sweden to give up on its project to recognize the Polisario’s self-proclaimed Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic.
