Rabat - The annual census of the Ministry of Education found that the education sector has nearly 600 ghost employees, according to a statement released by the Ministry.

The fraud was discovered after comparing data from the General Treasury of the Kingdom and that of the Ministry of Education.

According to the Ministry, the list includes nearly 600 ghost employees, the majority of which are teachers.

The statement added that the monthly bank transfers of unrecorded officials will be suspended and replaced by individual transfer orders, until the administrative situation is fixed.

The issue of ghost employees is not only a problem of the Ministry of Education but a challenge facing many public sectors.

Najib Boulif, the then-Minister in charge of Governance and General Affairs, claimed in 2012 that the Moroccan public sector had between 70,000 and 90,000 ghost workers out of a total of 860,000 employees.

The government is determined to crack down on ghost workers, as they are a massive expense compensating non-existent employees.
