Morocco Invests MAD 30 Billion in Rural Roads

By Cindy Basha

Rabat - The Moroccan government announced on Tuesday that it had invested MAD 30 billion to building roads in rural areas.

The Minister of Transport, Equipment and Logistics, Aziz Rabbah, told the House of Representatives this investment would make transportation and travel easier for people living in the isolated parts of the country.

This program, along with another similar initiative launched this year, will provide Morocco with 17,000 km of roads in rural areas. Studies show that these areas need roughly 50,000 km of additional roads to connect all isolated parts of the country.

The Minister stressed that the state spends 1.25 billion dirhams in regional road projects, based on the principle of equity between different regions.

Rabbah mentioned his department’s broader goal of improving the standard for living of people living in rural areas. The government plans to invest MAD 36 billion over the next seven years in rural areas and the marginalised parts of the country.

Regarding the control and maintenance of bridges, Rabbah said that the government has allocated  MAD 3billion for the emergency program aimed at the elimination of black spots, affecting 7,500 bridges at the national level, including 100 in critical condition and 200 in ruins.
